Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Five

I’m running late with this today!

This sounds like a fairly simple theme — but I couldn’t think of anything (interesting) to do until yesterday when I was driving downtown. But I didn’t have my camera with me and didn’t have time to go get it and come back before we had to be at a school play. I thought I would dash out some time today, but just didn’t make it. I’ll have to keep those things in mind if we ever have this theme again. 🙂

Then at one point today I noticed one of my favorite pieces of wall art had five roses in it:

I bought this several years ago at the Christian bookstore nearby. I loved what it said, I loved the pink roses, I loved topiaries, and I loved the 3-D effect.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Childhood

I didn’t realize just how few pictures I had of my childhood until I looked for some for this week’s theme! Next time I go home I’ll have to raid my mom’s pictures and copy some.

In this one I was about 3. I am told that I wasn’t smiling, for some reason, until someone gave me some pennies. 🙂

I think I am about 6 here with my little brother. I think this was on an Easter Sunday.

I posted this one before, but I was in the 6th grade here. This is one of my favorites.

And this is my 10th grade school picture.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Rare

I really thought I was going to have to sit this one out, because I just could not think of anything rare that I owned or had a picture of. Then I thought of this picture of my husband and I on our 25th wedding anniversary a year and a half ago. It’s rare because we don’t have many pictures of the two of us together, but what makes it more rare is that — this moment never actually happened. 🙂

momanddad25th.jpg

We had gone to stay at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC for our anniversary and went to visit the Biltmore House. My husband had grabbed batteries for the camera as we were getting ready to go but discovered, as we were trying to set this picture up at the Biltmore House, that the batteries were in fact old, almost dead ones. We only had enough “juice” to take two pictures. In one I was looking away, in the other he was. So, when we got back, I asked my oldest son, proficient in all things related to the computer, if he could Photoshop the two images — and he did. Pretty cool, huh?

At the park

This was taken several years ago at the same state park where some of my pictures from the “water” theme from a few weeks ago were taken. We had lived in this area for the first fourteen years we were married and frequently went to this state park to have a picnic, feed the ducks, etc. We moved to another state for four years and then moved back to SC, but father away from this place. Once or twice we’ve made treks back there since then. I don’t know quite what his structure was for — it was bigger than what was needed just to climb up and go down the pole, and I never saw it used as a stage. But I have pictures from different years with the boys at the top with their hands straight up, like in the picture below from several years earlier. It was one of those things they did every time we were there.

On the back of this picture I have written, “TA-DA!”

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Hobby

It’s been a busy day — and I am late with my photo hunt!

Needlework has been one of my favorite hobbies, and this piece was one of my favorite pieces to do. I made it before Jeremy was born, 22 years ago.

Needlework bears

Here is a close-up of the detail I love about this piece. I don’t know if it will show up well, but the little iced cookies are raised and the little cupcakes have french knot icing. I love the stitching for the grass and fringe on the blanket as well.

CIMG0557

It’s kind of sad that the boys have outgrown it and there is no place for it in the house now. I hope when the grandkids come along to have a room for them when they come over, so it will be back up then. 🙂

Most of the needlework I have done had been cross stitch, but most of that has been for gifts. I haven’t done any kind of needlework in ages — I wonder how well I’d be able to see it now.

One of my favorite hobbies has always been reading, as represented by two of our four bookcases:

Two of our four bookshelves

You can see to the side there evidence of one of Jason’s hobbies, golfing, though he hasn’t done much of it since getting out of high school.

And finally, one of my favorite new hobbies is computing. This is where I visit with all of you. 🙂

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Clean

Crosses

Psalm 51:1-10:

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

I John 1:7: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Psalm 51

John 15:3: Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Psalm 119:9: Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Water

When our older boys were little, there were a couple of state parks nearby where we would often have picnics.

A favorite activity at one was feeding the ducks at the lake. This is Jason at about age 2 or 3.

Feedig ducks

I think we only rented paddle boats there once or twice. They didn’t have them available all the time. This is Jeremy and I when he was maybe 5. Jim was on a different paddle boat with Jason (the back of whose head is in the foreground) and took the picture from there.

At the lake

The other state park had this lovely waterfall a very short hike into the woods.

Those were favorite family excursions many years ago. These picture bring back pleasant memories. 🙂

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Empty

It is a nice feeling when one of these is emptied — though it never stays that way for long. 🙂

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Drink

This is Jesse, about 11 years ago, getting a drink….

…but not out of a conventional lawn sprinkler. Jim put together some PVC piping and punched holes in it to make a sprinkler for the trampoline:

Looks like Jason is getting a drink there, too. The main idea wasn’t to have a ready water fountain at the trampoline, though that was nice, but to make it fun and cool for hot summer days in the south. Combined jumping on the trampoline with running through the sprinkler.

You’d think the water would have made the trampoline really slick and slippery, but it didn’t — it actually kind of slowed the bounciness. The kids loved it.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt: Architecture

I thought about posting more pictures of the Biltmore House, but I have done that a couple of times and wanted to do something different.

Here’s some old-fashioned architecture from downtown:

Here is a better-than-average looking McDonald’s:

img_3020.JPG

I think it’s in the Asheville, NC area, since it is with that group of pictures.

This is the Grove Park Inn in Asheville:

img_3050.JPG

I really don’t like the style or color of the roof, but love everything else about it. Some years ago we had gone to Asheville for our anniversary and we ate here but stayed in a cheaper hotel, then visited the Biltmore House the next day. I always wanted to go back and actually stay at the Grove Park Inn, so we did that on our 25th anniversary. It was very nice.

Here’s one inside shot:

img_3022.JPG

That was in the month of December, as you can tell, where we discovered they have an annual gingerbread house competition. Here are some of the architectural entries in it:

As I was posting these I remembered I have a few envelopes of pictures from our trip one year to Charleston, SC, which would have more gorgeous architecture that I would probably love even more then these, but I would have to dig them out and scan them — and you’re probably already tired of this long post anyway. 🙂
